JROTC ROTC

MOAA Chapters throughout California recognize the importance of partnering with JROTC and ROTC units located within their respective geographical areas.  Chapters engage with these units in a variety of ways to help foster their development into future civic leaders and future Military Officers.

JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps)

What It Is: A high school program designed to teach students leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Purpose: To develop students into responsible citizens and leaders, fostering a sense of service to community and country.

Focus Areas:

  • Leadership skills
  • Discipline and teamwork
  • Physical fitness
  • Community service
  • Basic military knowledge (non-recruitment-focused)
  • Commitment: Participation in JROTC does not obligate students to join the military.

ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps)

What It Is: A college-level program that trains students to become officers in the U.S. military.

Purpose: To develop military officers while allowing participants to earn a college degree.

Focus Areas:

  • Advanced leadership training
  • Military tactics and strategy
  • Physical and mental discipline
  • Academic success alongside military training
  • Commitment: Students typically receive scholarships in exchange for a commitment to serve as an officer after graduation.
